「for pioneering contributions to high-frequency phononics and picosecond laser ultrasonics, especially ultrafast optical techniques for acoustic-wave detection and time-domain Brillouin scattering; for establishing rigorous theoretical methods for interpreting ultrafast optical reflection and transmission in transparent multilayers and quantum-well structures perturbed by gigahertz acoustic waves; for demonstrating high-frequency coherent shear-phonon generation and detection, developing the associated theory of optical detection, and advancing ultrafast ellipsometric methods for acoustic-wave analysis; and for creating arbitrary-frequency imaging methods for gigahertz acoustic fields in solids, including electrically excited waves, Lamb waves, phononic crystals, and topological phononic structures, thereby opening new routes for generating, detecting, and imaging coherent acoustic waves in solids」
