Japanese Government: MEXT scholarships

Japanese government MEXT scholarship, nomination through e3 program"Global Leadership Program for Cold Region Engineering" (Deadline: January 5, 2020) /CLOSED

The application starts with screening and selection for the scholarship. Applicants are expected to be academically excellent and strongly motivated to conduct Master or Doctoral level research at one of laboratories at e3 program. The candidates who passed the first screening (document screening and interview with a prospective supervisor) will proceed to the second screening (interview with nomination committee) and be asked to submit additional documents to complete the procedure. Applicants who are nominated for the scholarship must subsequently apply for admission to the e3 program, the Graduate School of Engineering. (Caution: MEXT Scholarship application and admission of the Graduate School of Engineering are separate procedures.)

Master course: 144,000 JPY
Doctoral course: 145,000 JPY

Admission with this scholarship is possible only in October, 2020.


Applicant’s birthday must be on or after April 2nd, 1985.
Applicants must have nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Those who reside in Japan are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants must have excellent academic record and proficient in English.

Japanese government MEXT: Top Global University Scholarship / No Call for October 2020

In September 2014 Hokkaido University has been selected for the Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Top Global University Project, as one of the 13 Type A: Top Type universities. This higher education reform initiative aims to support internationalization and reform in Japanese universities and help to improve their world ranking in the next 10 years. Few additional scholarships have been provided under this project.

Conditions of the scholarship (as of March 2019)

Amount: 144,000yen (regular students in Master’s course), or 145,000 yen (regular students in doctoral course). Additional 3000 yen are paid during the winter semester. Arrival ticket is provided (return travel expenses are not provided).

Tuition fees: exempted for the period of the scholarship

Period of the scholarship: 24 month (extension of the period of the scholarship is not possible*);
*The scholarship will cover only first two years of doctoral program;
*The extension of scholarhsip from Master's course to Phd is not possible.

Number of scholarships: few


Admission with this scholarship is possible only in October.

Application deadline and procedure

Scholarship nomination results will be announced in mIddle June.
Successfull candidates are excempt from the payment of the examination fee (JPY30'000). Application fee payment for the eligible scholarship applicants can be deferred untill the scholarship selection results announcement.


Scholarship has age restrictions. Applicants for October 2019 intake must have been born on or after April 2,1984.
Applicants must have nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Applicants who reside in Japan are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants shall fulfill e3 program admission requirnements (e3 Special Selection)
Applicant should have excellent academic performance, fulfill program's and MEXT minimum requirenments and be ranked high in his class/grade.


Japanese government (MEXT) scholarships, embassy selection –

Apply through the Japanese Embassy in your home country using the application form provided by the Japanese Embassy.  If you pass the preliminary screening, you will be asked to submit an acceptance letter from a Japanese university of your choice.  To obtain a letter of acceptance from e3, you should send/email us a set of the same documents as those submitted to the Japanese Embassy, with a confirmation seal of the Japanese Embassy affixed, and a certificate of the primary selection issued by the Japanese Embassy.  You should select two professors or laboratories in your message so that we can forward your application to them for consideration.
