About the laboratory

Description

Our research is focused on acoustics, optics, materials sciences, and mechanical vibrations.  Some representative topics are nanoscale ultrasonic wave generation and detection in materials and structures using ultrashort pulsed lasers, surface acoustic wave visualization, ultrafast electronic and thermal diffusion in solids, topological phononics, acoustic metamaterials, mechanical metamaterials, plasmonics, spin-phonon interactions.

Organization of research

First year Master's students split their time and effort evenly between coursework and research. Students acquire fundamental background skills through coursework and research review.
We expect all students to acquire basic experimental techniques. Fresh students participate in laboratory weekly seminars held in May-July. They learn the basic experimental skills in July-September.  Then they move to their own individual research work from October.
We also hold a weekly meeting for all members, to exchange important updates and to engage in research presentations. We hold individual meetings for specific research groups. Faculty members meet students during the seminars, meetings, and experiments.
Our facilities include are ultrafast time-resolved laser spectroscopy systems, acoustic measurement systems, 3D printers, and motion-capture systems.

Enrolled students' research topics

The research topic is determined according to the student's interests and aspirations, and based on mutual agreement between the student and advisor(s). Students are welcome to suggest their own ideas and preferences. In most cases, the advisor(s) suggests multiple options from which the students choose. Some students work on a continuing project inherited from a previous student, often in collaboration with a senior student. Also, students often work on a completely new project.

Information for potential applicants

Applicants' background

We are looking for people with a good knowledge in basic physics (classical mechanics, electro-magnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics) and mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, vector analysis), and with some basic experimental skills.

Who should apply?

Students with a strong interest in the basics and application of physics, including laboratory experiments, especially in the fields of optics, acoustics, and materials science.

How to choose a research proposal topic?

It would be preferable if the proposal is related to the laboratory's research profile topic of the applicant's interest.

How the research proposal is evaluated?

We evaluate the student proposal based on (1) basic knowledge and understanding the research question, (2) strong motivation to solve the question and finish your Master's or Doctoral course (3) story of the proposal and logical discussion and (4) English.
