Research topic

Population dynamics of freshwater anammox bacterial species in membrane bioreactor

Research abstract

Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) is a biological process in which ammonium is directly oxidized to nitrogen gas under anoxic conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor. Annammox is considered as novel wastewater trseatment process while water pollution caused by nitrogen is a problem. Anammox bacteria belongs the bacterial phylum Planctomycetes and 6 genera have been proposed. Although no pure culture is available, studies in enrichment culture has been conducted. While enriching anammox bacteria, one species outcompeted with other bacterial species. One of the causes of that is considered to be the difference in physiological characteristics of each anammox species such as specific growth rate, substrate affinity, tolerance to inhibitors, and so on.
