Nitrogen isotope effects induced by anammox bacteria

Research abstract

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria is thought to be an important fixed nitrogen sink in marine ecosystems. Nitrogen is essential for all organisms because it is constituent element of protein and nucleic acid. In marine ecosystems, microorganisms convert nitrogen to dinitrogen gas under hypoxia condition. In order to analyze this nitrogen cycle, isotope effect is often applied. Actually, the nitrogen isotope analysis succeeded to assess nitrogen sinks of heterotrophic denitrification bacteria and cyanobacteria in under water ecosystem. However, nitrogen isotope effect associated with anammox metabolism is unknown. Therefore, I study nitrogen isotope effects of four Anammox species: "Ca. Scalindua japonica", "Ca. Brocadia sinica", "Ca. Jettenia caeni", Ca. Brocadia sp40".
