Field monitoring of volcanic embankment slope in cold region(Slope was failure on October 2013)

There are many fill and embankment which are consisted to volcanic soil in Hokkaido. In winter, volcanic soil ground is expanded by freezing pore water. The volume of void (or void ratio) in the ground becomes large due to freezing action. The volume of void (or void ratio) cannot return to its original value even if the frozen ground melts in spring season. Besides, if snowmelt water flow and rainfall occur at the same time, many amount of water flow into the ground causes a failure of slope or lack of stability of ground.

In this study, the embankment slope by compaction of a volcanic soil was constructed on 2012. At the embankment, soil moisture meters, tensiometers and thermometers were installed into the embankment slope. Until the slope failure occurred, many digital data could be recorded continuously. Based on those data, the mechanism of slope failure is tried to clarify. Hereafter, undisturbed soil samples will be collect at the embankment slope in order to investigate the mechanical properties in detail by laboratory tests.
