Water Metabolic System -Sustainable Water Management

Objectives

  • Drastic solution to the issues of drought and water pollution
  • Shift emphasis from water transportation to quality conversion

“Area-based society” can be defined as a broad area of people’s livelihood including river basin and coastal area. In order to build up a sustainable society, we must maintain the environment of area-based society clean and comfortable, and also minimize what the urban activities affect on the natural environment. To achieve the above objectives, it is highly effective to take in the leading-edge bio or nano technologies to our conventional studies on the water environment. The water metabolic system group of our COE project, from this standpoint, works on various kinds of research activities, such as improvement and advancement of water supply and sewerage systems, recovery of valuable materials from sewage and waste water, conservation and improvement of watershed environment, evaluation of water quality, and so on.

Technologies required

  1. Autonomous water utilization and recycling system by integrating nanotechnology (i.e. membrane filteration and adsorbent mesoporous madreporite) and biotechnology (i.e. biochemical treatment)
  2. Resource (especially phosphorus) recovery technology from wastewater using adsorbent mesoporous madreporite and enzyme
  3. Establishment of multi-characteristic evaluation methods using new types of DNA chips for the risk managemen
