Call for Postgraduate Students

Nanoscience & Spin-Optics Group of The Ultrafast Quantum Optics Laboratory was founded in the Department of Applied Physics, Faculty of Engineering, Hokkaido University in April 2010.
Graduates with a background in the fields of physics, optics, electronics, or material sciences are invited to apply to join our group in the investigation of the following subjects:

  • Dynamics and manipulation of single spin in semiconductor nanostructures
  • Hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclei in a single quantum dot
  • Development of high sensitive nonlinear multidimensional spectroscopic techniques including imaging spectroscopy
  • Exciton and exciton complexes in semiconductor nanostructures
  • Exciton-exciton interaction in wide band-gap semiconductors (GaN, ZnO, etc.)

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of achievement in their undergraduate studies and, if applicable, in their Master course studies. Experiences of using lasers and learning quantum mechanics / quantum electronics / quantum optics are preferable. We offer work with up-to-date equipment in a renowned national university in Japan. Especially, high level spectroscopic techniques will be learned.
Hokkaido University is located in Sapporo, which is the largest city on the northernmost island of Japan and a good place to live and study.

Candidates for the masters course must pass the entrance examination. For non-Japanese students, English Engineering Education program (e3 program) is available. The admission criteria are found in the website of e3 program. Please contact the e3 office.
For more details, see

Financial support is available for non-Japanese students on the MEXT program of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technologies in Japan or other programs. (See, for example, International Student Center and Japan Student Services Organization).

Candidates for the doctoral course should provide a CV and the names and contact information for 2-3 references. For further information, please contact
