• The 2nd COE Workshop on Membrane Bioreactor
Monday 12 July 2004
Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan
  • Scope and objectives of the workshop
Application of membrane technology has gained rapid acceptance for use in wastewater treatment. Especially, membrane bioreactor (MBR) in which membranes are combined with biological processes, has attracted increasing interest both academically and commercially. In the past few years the interest in the application of MBRs in wastewater treatment is shifted from primary process performance to optimization of the MBRs for more efficient use. The next step in development that has to be taken, is to gain more fundamental understanding of the process characteristics. This workshop is designed to share information on current practices and limitations in the use of MBR technology. The fundamentals of membrane fouling in MBR will be described. The remainder of the workshop will focus on practical experiences in the improvement in nutrient removal, microbial ecology of a MBR process and the trends in the use of membrane. Based on the shared information, future research requirement and research opportunities related to MBR technology will be intensively discussed.
