Mr. Taichi Matsuzaki, who completed his master's program in our laboratory in March 2024, was granted a 50% waiver on the repayment of his Type 1 Graduate School Scholarship. During his studies, Mr. Matsuzaki actively engaged in research activities, giving two presentations at international conferences and receiving one Outstanding Presentation Award. Congratulations, Mr. Matsuzaki.

The public dissertation presentation by third-year doctoral student Ms. Thaw Dar Wunn was held. The title of her dissertation is “Sustainable management of a legacy mine considering long-term contaminant transport.”
An academic paper by Assistant Professor Arima was published (2025/7/20)
An academic paper authored by Assistant Professor Arima as the first and corresponding author,
entitled “Geochemical behavior and environmental implications of arsenic in roasted tailings from the Vatukoula Epithermal Gold Mine in Fiji,”
has been published in *Environmental Geochemistry and Health*.
This study clarified, through laboratory experiments, how arsenic occurs in ores from the Vatukoula gold mine in Fiji,
how it changes when the ores are roasted, and how it behaves in the tailings storage facilities where the residues are deposited.

Professor Hiroyoshi, Assistant Professor Arima, and second-year master's student Mr. Murata from our laboratory have been conducting a joint research project titled "Optimization of Stirring Conditions During Waste Incineration Using Supercomputers and AI – A Demonstration Project to Replace Skilled Operators" in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba, EXEO Group Inc., in Moriyama City. This project has been featured on the Hokkaido University website.

Kick-off Meeting Held for SATREPS Project on "Next-generation Smart Mining Plus for Sustainable Resources Development"(2025/4/15)
On April 15, 2025, the kick-off meeting for the SATREPS project titled "Next-generation Smart Mining Plus for Sustainable Resources Development" was held in Tokyo.
Professor Hiroyoshi and Assistant Professor Arima are participating in this international research initiative.
The project is a large-scale endeavor scheduled to continue through the 2029 fiscal year, aiming to establish environmentally harmonious and sustainable mining development systems that do not cause environmental degradation.
