Educational Purpose
A message from the head of Architecture Course
The Architecture and Building Engineering Course of the Department of Socio-Environmental Engineering of Hokkaido University was established as the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering in 1948, for the purpose of research and education, whose goal is to investigate scientifically the life-styles and cultures in the cold and snowy region, and to provide the education to students to become capable engineers in the field of architecture and building engineering.
The target of education is to develop an advanced generalist who has the
fundamental knowledge and ability in the special field prior to the broad
activity in the society or the higher education in the graduate school.
In addition, the efforts has continuously been made in the Architecture and
Building Engineering Course to incorporate, in both education and research,
the philosophy of Hokkaido University such as the frontier spirit, the
cultivation of international vision, the education for the generalist, and the
respect for regionality and practical science.
In 2003, the Architecture and Building Engineering Course was accredited by
the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE). The
accreditation by JABEE is a testimony that the philosophy of Hokkaido
University have been preserved in the education program of the department, and
is also an evidence that the quality of education provided to the graduates is
of sufficient level both in Japan and overseas. An accreditated graduate by
JABEE will be exempt from the primary licensure examination for professional
engineers, and the accreditation by JABEE will serve as a passport for a
graduate of this department to obtain the position in the field of
architecture, building engineering and urban planning in other countries.
The graduates in this course have taken an active part in the broad field of
the architecture and building engineering cherishing its tradition. The
members of the Architecture and Building Engineering Course are proud of
turning out many competent engineers who advance toward future.
The head of Architecture Course, Professor, HAYAMA Hirofumi
