Research Topic
Physiological adaptation of anammox bacteria under substrate-limited conditions
研究概要
Anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria play a crucial role in the global nitrogen cycle by converting ammonium and nitrite into nitrogen gas, thereby reducing reactive nitrogen in aquatic environments. They have been detected in diverse natural habitats, ranging from freshwater systems to marine environments, and are estimated to contribute significantly to global nitrogen loss. Most of our current understanding of anammox bacteria comes from studies conducted under laboratory conditions, where substrates are continuously supplied to sustain rapid growth. However, in natural environments, these bacteria often experience substrate-limited or oligotrophic conditions, where growth is extremely slow and maintenance metabolism becomes predominant. Under such conditions, anammox bacteria must employ distinct physiological strategies to maintain cellular activity and survive in competition with other microorganisms. This research aims to elucidate how anammox bacteria adapt to low-energy and low-nutrient environments by investigating their physiological responses under near-zero growth conditions. Understanding these adaptive mechanisms will deepen our knowledge of their ecological roles and enhance modeling of nitrogen removal processes in natural ecosystems.
