Physiological characteristics of anammox bacteria
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a promising nitrogen removal treatment approach, in which ammonium is converted to nitrogen by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria utilizing nitrite as the electron acceptor. With excellent characteristic of cost-saving and environmental-friendly, an increasing number of anammox installations have been applied into biological wastewater treatment. So far six genera of anammox bacteria are reported, including Candidatus Brocadia, Jettenia, Kuenenia, Scalindua, and, Anammoxoglobus. The purpose of the present study is to investigate physiological characteristics of anammox bacteria in details by anaerobic batch experiments.
