Conductive membrane fabrication and Characterization for improving the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs)

Research Topic

Researchers are coming up with very promising wastewater treatment technologies as the stressors on the water resources across the world is rising. The water resources, especially in the developing countries, are facing serious challenges derived from industrial pollution, agricultural pollution and domestic pollution. It has been found that the wastewater treatment accounts a share of about 3-5% of the total electrical energy consumption in many developing and developed countries. This study aims to facilitate the development of a wastewater treatment system by integrating the technology of microbial fuel cell (MFC) with membrane bioreactors (MBR). MFC-MBR are complementary while mitigating the limitations of each other. This concept has been investigated in recent years in the field of wastewater treatment. It is an efficient approach in the degradation of organic pollutants besides producing power which could support the treatment system itself and has a potential to get net positive energy output.
