Exploration of Nitrospira specific bacteriophages for achievement of partial nitrification

Research abstract

Anammox (Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidizing) process is regarded to be a new nitrogen removal way using much less energy than a conventional nitrification-denitrification method. A key to apply this anammox process is achievement of partial nitrification; partial oxidation of ammonium to nitrite by AOB (aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria). However, this is the rate-limiting reaction and NOB (nitrite oxidizing bacteria) convert the nitrite to nitrate. Then that will lead to unstable nitrogen removal. Some solutions have been already shown but are not practical or economical. In this research, I suggest to utilizing NOB specific bacteriophages to control the NOB population. I establish the main NOB, Nitrospira enrichment culture and to find the specific phages for the first step
