RS Kumamoto 2nd. Bulletin

INTRODUCTION

The aims of the Symposium - RS Kumamoto '97 - are to discuss various problems and topics on rock stress and rock stress measurements for the benefit of exchanging knowledge concerning recently developed techniques and to spread the knowledge to all the countries of the world for further development.

We have accepted 110 abstracts from 25 countries representing a wide field of research and application. The three days program will include two special lectures, five keynote lectures and six technical sessions. Oral and poster presentations will be held in the following technical sessions:

1. Methods for stress measurement

2. Interpretation of rock stresses

3. Interpretation of rock fracture phenomena

4. State of stress in the earth crust

5. Application of rock stress measurements in mining

6. Application of rock stress measurements in civil engineering

LOCATION

Kumamoto City is located the center of Kyushu Island, the southern most main island of Japan. By air, it takes 90 minutes from Tokyo and 60 minutes from Osaka, by train it is 80 minutes from Fukuoka. Kumamoto has one of Japan's finest castles plus a contender for Japan's best garden title and various natural surroundings, which include Mt. Aso, with gigantic caldera and an active volcano, and Amakusa Islands, with beautiful seascapes. The Kumamoto area also has an abundance of natural hot springs.

October is the best season to come to Kumamoto.

As you plan to attend RS Kumamoto '97, note that the 1st Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium will be held in October 13-15, 1997, in Seoul, an hour from Kumamoto by air.
