    Session information

During the last years much research has been carried out to understand the
physical properties of rocks in their interrelationship to rock composition
and microstructure, to heterogeneity and anisotropy, to processes like fluid
flow, diagenesis, metamorphism, and partial melting, and to interactions
between solid and fluid phase at the internal surface. In this session we
would like to invite contributions that deal with all aspects of physical
rock properties based on experimental and theoretical investigations in all
scales, from Lab to field, and on all types of geomaterials. We would like
to have contributions regarding all factors that influence the physical rock
properties, regarding the use of physical measurements and methods to
characterise rocks, and the use of physical measurements and methods to
    study processes within rocks.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

SE34 Symposium on Characterization of deep reservoirs

Convenor: D. Mainprice (Montpellier) Co-Convenor: Ernst Huenges (Potsdam)
    david@dstu.univ-montp2.fr huenges@gfz-potsdam.de

The scope of the symposium is all aspects of the characterization of deep
reservoirs. Laboratory, theoretical or field studies of reservoir rock
properties at depth are welcomed in this symposium. The intensive
exploitation of shallow reservoir systems for water, gas, oil and geothermal
energy has resulted in a depletion of these resources. There is an increasing
need to exploit the more financially demanding and technically difficult
reservoirs at greater depths. The greater depths give rise in higher
temperatures, pressures with more chemically reactive elements and increasing
mineral plasticity, which until recently were mainly the concerns of academic
"deep" crustal studies. Bore holes have been drilled in sedimentary sequences
down to 9 km depth and in geothermal reservoirs down to 4 km. The
characterization of reservoirs at these depths and their potential for
economic exploitation require a more detailed knowledge of physical properties
and their evolution with time at (high) temperature (e.g. permeability, thermal
conductivity, kinetics of pore closure). The simultaneous measurement of
several properties on the same sample or field region are encouraged. The
presentation of new techniques which give new insights into the physical
behaviour of deep reservoirs in more extreme conditions at are also welcome.

              ***** SYMPOSIUM ON *****
"COMPACTION, SUBSIDENCE, AND THE MECHANICS OF GRANULAR MATERIALS"

A key issue in geophysics is to understand compaction processes in
reservoir rocks. It is well known that hydrocarbon extraction reduces
pore pressure and thus increases effective stresses. Whereas the
accompanying compaction may result in improved oil recovery (compaction
drive), the price to pay will often be subsidence problems at the
surface, and well stability problems in the reservoir.
Despite recent advances in our understanding of the petrophysical
properties of granular reservoir materials, many fundamental aspects of
their behaviour during compaction remain unresolved. These include:
behaviour of overburden and arching effects, boundary conditions and
reservoir stress paths, behaviour of the reservoir rock mass on a
macroscopic scale, effect of inhomogeneities and fractures, response of
granular materials to fluids, temperature and effective pressure cycling
(water or gas injection), micromechanism of compaction at the pore and
grain level, influence of the rock microstructure, and chemical effects
    at the fluid-solid interface.
The aim of the symposium will be to reveal the state of the art within
the subject, with emphasis on basic mechanisms and future developments.
One key issue of the symposium will be to bring together scientists
working at different scales (laboratory scale, reservoir scale), using
different approaches (experimental work, field studies, numerical
modelling) to study compaction and related effects.

a number of disciplines and share common interests.

There are numerous coupled phenomena in subsurface engineering. However,
this conference focuses on the phenomena attributed to the coupling merely
between the solid mechanical impact and other mechanisms, such as (a)
