Makoto KOBUKE; graduated in 2008

I'm Kobuke! Currently I am engaged in application development at a membrane manufacturer. Amidst the increased focus of attention on an impending global water shortage, I work every day with a sense of purpose that I am enabling a safe and moreover secure water supply to the people of the world.

During my student days, I carried out research for three years on the coagulation-MF hybrid system for removal of viruses. (1) At the Environmental Risk Engineering Laboratory, you will be able to engage in broad, cutting-edge research on water treatment. (2) In addition, you can enjoy the experience of presenting at academic meetings both in Japan and overseas as long as you are motivated. In fact, almost all master's program students have had the experience of presenting in English overseas. I gave an oral presentation at the IWA membrane meeting held in Moscow and even received an award for it. (3) Through frequent barbequed lamb parties, the customary Christmas parties at Professor Matsui's house, and occasional overnight experiments, I feel that students become closely bonded, transcending the barrier of academic class. Even after entering the workforce, graduates of the Environmental Risk Engineering Laboratory remain very close.

Presenting at an international academic meeting when I was in the master's program was a particularly valuable opportunity for self-improvement. Experience makes the difference when it comes to presentation and language capabilities. I still have much to improve day-by-day, but I am extremely grateful to the laboratory for the opportunity to present research findings at the weekly seminar as well as the chance to participate in an international meeting, which was my first step overseas in the environmental engineering field-a field that should become increasingly important in foreign countries moving forward.

New discoveries depend on your own actions! I hope that proactive students come together in the laboratory and make it an even more exciting place. And please by all means talk directly to current students and teaching staff to find out more.
