Prof. Hiroki HABAZAKI
Dean
Faculty and School of Engineering

The School of Engineering at Hokkaido University was established in 1924 as the third faculty and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. Since its founding as the Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876, Hokkaido University has cultivated four basic philosophies following the spirit of Dr. William S. Clark, the first vice-President of our University: "Frontier Spirit", "Global Perspectives", "All-round Education", and "Practical Learning". In line with the basic philosophies, the School of Engineering has adopted a basic policy of "contributing to society through engineering as a discipline whose mission is to make human life more comfortable and affluent", and we are striving to foster engineering professionals who can create a future society and thrive globally. The School of Engineering consists of 15 courses in the four departments of Applied Science and Engineering, Electronics and Information Engineering, Mechanical and Intelligent System Engineering, and Socio-Environmental Engineering, and is working to enrich the curriculum across disciplines as well as education in each specialized field.

The Faculty of Engineering, which serves as a research organization, comprises nine divisions, five research and education centers, and joint-use facilities. We promote worldleading frontier research and socially implemented research utilizing the fields of Hokkaido in collaboration with many research organizations within and outside the University. In particular, for innovation creation, we have established "Research and Education Center for Robust Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Industry", "f3 Engineering Education and Research Center(on Space, Aviation, Marine Engineering)", and "Center of Ambitious Research and Education for Nuclear Safety". Our Faculty members also play an important role in the "Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery", which was established in 2018 as a new World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) research center supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The School of Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering aim to become a world-leading research and education center in engineering with diverse members full of frontier spirit, contributing to establishing a sustainable and prosperous future society.

Prof. Norihiro IZUMI
Dean
Graduate School of Engineering

Human beings now face unprecedented crises such as pandemics caused by unknown infectious diseases, the rise of authoritarian states and the crisis of democracy, and the intensification of weather disasters due to global warming. The multidimensional interaction of numerous multi-layered factors causes these problems, many of which scientific and engineering achievements can help solve. However, scientific and engineering knowledge alone cannot make their achievements useful. It requires not only in-depth knowledge of a single field and advanced problem-solving skills but also a broad understanding of various fields, including the humanities, and the ability to combine these with flexible thinking and a wealth of imagination.

The Graduate School of Engineering consists of master's and doctoral programs in engineering. Many people may enter the Graduate School of Engineering because they feel that they did not acquire sufficient expertise and knowledge in the School of Engineering. However, besides expertise studies in the Graduate School of Engineering, I hope you will absorb diverse knowledge by taking lectures outside your specialization and simultaneously polish your other abilities. If you work hard in your research, for example, you can present your research results at international conferences and talk with overseas students and researchers. By doing so, you will acquire high intellect, such as global communication skills and a broad perspective toward the world, which you cannot obtain as an undergraduate.

It is indisputable that one of the cornerstones of a society's development is highly skilled science and engineering personnel. We hope that you will acquire a variety of skills based on engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering to become highly qualified in science and engineering personnel. The Graduate School of Engineering will respond to your ambitions.
