Combustion Synthesis of Intermetallic-Ceramic Composites

When a mixture of elemental powders is heated, a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS, or Combustion Synthesis) reaction occurs and ceramic particles dispersed intermetallic materials are produced. The figures below show an example of the combustion synthesis of an FeAl-TiB2 system composite material. FeAl-based material having very fine TiB2 particles can be obtained by just heating the powder mixture to approximately 700 ℃. The Vickers hardness of this composite material is approximately 1500 HV, and the density is approximately 5 g/cm3. Based on this method, the synthesis and simultaneous joining and coating are available. The possible applications are working tools , joining and coating to sliding parts and so on.
