TiN Coating on Titanium
When titanium is heat-treated in an atmosphere of nitrogen, a TiN layer having a golden color forms on the surface of Titanium (Fig. 1), which leads to remarkable improvement in wear resistance (Fig. 2). The hardness of the TiN coated titanium is approximately 2000 in Vickers hardness number, which is twice higher than that of quenched carbon steel. The TiN coated titanium exhibits amazing corrosion resistance. The weight loss during immersion in a very strong acid containing HNO3, HCl and HF was very little, for example.
Possible applications: ornaments, golf clubs, cutting tools, lining of tubes.
