About the laboratory

Description

Professor Shimizu’s research interest includes precision dimensional metrology, surface metrology, optical metrology, precision positioning and related sensor technology for machine tools and manufacturing processes in production engineering. It should be noted that ongoing research projects are a bit far from robotics.

Associate Professor Emaru's research interest includes robotics such as; autonomous driving in snowy environments, infrastructure inspection using drone, development of weeding robot, remote sensing for agriculture/forestry using drone, and so on.

Organization of research

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

Master course students will work on their course: 50% and on their research activity: 50% in their first semester. Afterwards, they are expected to concentrate on the research activity in the laboratory.  A one-to-one meeting with the supervisor will be held once a week.

For the students willing to be supervised by Associate Professor Emaru:Master/PhD course students will join a research progress report seminar once a week. For Master course students, we will arrange a seminar for academic journal reading, seminar to acquire the ability to carry out simulations and experiments

Ongoing projects

Prof. Shimizu:

(1) Challenge to the next-generation ultra-precision optical metrology (JST FOREST project)
(2) Development of a laser probe with a femtosecond laser source and a micro thermal sensor for the non-destructive evaluation of a sub-surface (JSPE project)
(3) Fabrication of a large-area micro-pattern array based on laser lithography (JSPE project)
(4) Development of an optical sensor / micro sensor for precision metrology

Enrolled students' research topics

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

Research topic will be determined through mutual negotiation between the instructor and student regarding his/her interests. Basically, the students are expected to join the project related to the ongoing projects listed above. A new proposal is also appreciated, of course.

For the students willing to be supervised by Associate Professor Emaru:

Basically, the students are expected to join the following projects; autonomous driving in snowy environments, infrastructure inspection using drone, development of weeding robot, remote sensing for agriculture/forestry using drone, and so on.

Information for potential applicants

Applicants' background

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

Students are expected to have basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering with some experience in the fabrication of electric circuits. Operation skills of machine tools and programming skills (in Matlab, Labview, C++, etc.) will also be appreciated.

For the students willing to be supervised by Associate Professor Emaru:

Students are expected to have basic knowledge of mechanical engineering.

Who should apply?

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

Students having interests in precision engineering. Students are expected to learn Japanese by themselves so that they can live in Japan with comfort. It should be noted that applicants wishing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu must contact the laboratory before submitting their proposal. Proposals without prior notice will be automatically rejected.

How to choose a research proposal topic?

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

It would be preferable if the proposal is related to the laboratory's research profile and the topic of the applicant's interest.

How the research proposal is evaluated?

For the students willing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu:

A student proposal will be evaluated based on (1) basic knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering, (2) motivation to successfully finish his/her course, (3) cooperation with other members, and (4) English. For the applicant to the master course, (5) his/her career paths after finishing the master's course will also be considered. It should be noted that applicants wishing to be supervised by Prof. Shimizu must contact the laboratory before submitting their proposal. Proposals without prior notice will be automatically rejected.
