About the laboratory

Description

Our research is focused on enhanced oil recovery (EOR), crude oil emulsion stability, multi-scale reservoir simulation, evaluating the physicochemical, mechanical and durability characteristics of cementitious materials, geochemical modelling, development of sustainable cementitious materials, cement chemistry, and development of multi-scale simulator to predict hydration and durability performance of concrete. Our students are trained in various experimental techniques and computer modelling. We have a strong national and international collaboration.

Organization of research

First year master students spilt their time between taking necessary courses for graduation and research activities. They are focused on acquiring fundamental knowledge on their research topic while learning various experimental techniques and simulation tools. Ph.D students are mainly focused on research activities from the first year in addition to take necessary courses for graduation. We hold weekly seminar for students to present their ongoing research activities and progress as well as to practice their presentations for conferences. Each student will present at the seminar once in two months. In addition, the students have individual or group meeting with supervisor to discuss more deeply about their research and papers. We have many experimental facilities to study inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, solid chemistry, and electrochemistry of cementitious materials and crude oil.

Ongoing projects

Please check our website (https://www.eng.hokudai.ac.jp/labo/cher/about.html) and latest published papers.

Enrolled students' research topics

Students can continue or contribute to the current research projects. In addition, we welcome new research topics from students, but it should be fit well with our research interest.

Information for potential applicants

Applicants' background

We are looking for students with a good background in chemistry and mathematics in addition to some basic experimental skills.

How to choose a research proposal topic?

We welcome any good research proposal on cementitious materials, enhanced oil recovery and emulsion stability which have a high impact on the future research trend in the field.
