About the laboratory
Description
Ultrafast Quantum Optics Laboratory participates actively in material & optical sciences and technology. Prof. Adachi and Prof. Sekikawa lead a nanoscience & spin-optics group and an experimental laser physics group, respectively.
1. Nano Science & Spin-Optics Group (Prof. Satoru ADACHI)
Our group aims to study and manipulate spins in solid material nanostructures optically in a time-resolved manner. Currently, we are devoted to the study of dynamical processes of ensemble of electron and nuclear spins in a single quantum dot and to the development of telecommunication wavelength quantum memory using Er-doped crystals.
2. Ultrafast Chemistry & High-Field Physics Group (Prof. Taro SEKIKAWA)
Associate Prof. Sekikawa leads an experimental laser physics group interested in extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft x-ray nonlinear optics and spectroscopy through high harmonic generation. On going project is the development of the single harmonic separator for XUV time-resolved spectroscopy.
For more information, please visit each group's website.
Organization of research
Graduates in the fields of physics, optics, electronics, and materials science are welcome to join our group (Nano Science & Spin-Optics Group) for research in the following topics:
- Dynamics and manipulation of single spins in semiconductor nanostructures
- Ultrafine interactions between electrons and nuclei in single quantum dots
- Quantum memory based on erbium-doped crystals
- Development of highly sensitive nonlinear multidimensional spectroscopy including imaging spectroscopy
- Excitons and exciton complexes in semiconductor nanostructures
- Exciton-exciton interactions in wide bandgap semiconductors (GaN, ZnO, etc.)
Ultrafast Chemistry & High-Field Physics is looking for undergraduate and graduate students to work with us in our studies and research. We are currently working on the following projects based on our knowledge of optics and quantum electronics.
- Development of light sources and spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray regions
- Research in the field of chemical physics as a light source application.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of achievement in their undergraduate and, in some cases, master's level research. Experience with lasers and with quantum mechanics/quantum electronics/quantum optics is desirable. We offer work at a well-known Japanese national university using state-of-the-art equipment. In particular, you will be able to learn advanced spectroscopic techniques.
Hokkaido University is located in Sapporo, the largest city on Japan's northernmost island and a good place to live and study.
Ongoing projects
Please visit our Lab and group websites.
Enrolled students' research topics
Each research topic will be determined based on its academic importance, student interest, and available samples and equipment.
