With a population approaching nearly two million, Sapporo is the largest city and main commercial and business center of Hokkaido, the largest and northern-most prefecture in Japan. Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, and is famous for its Snow Festival, Sapporo beer, ramen noodles, and 'Genghis Khan' dish - a type of barbecued mutton. Being a new city, Sapporo has a rectangular street system with wonderful open and tree-filled boulevards.

The meeting venue, Hokkaido University, is a world-leading university. It was founded in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, and was re-organized into the Hokkaido Imperial University in 1907, one of the seven imperial universities. Subsequently, in 1947, it was renamed as Hokkaido University. The Sapporo campus of Hokkaido University occupies 1,776,249 m2, and has many places and heritages to visit. A few examples are the American Victorian style building 'Furukawa Kodo,' the Old School of Entomology, the former Library Building, the University Museum, and an avenue of poplar trees. The university's main gate is less than a 10-minute walk from Sapporo Station, the main railway hub in Sapporo.
