Our laboratory has various researches, City and Regional Planning, UrbanDesign, Community Planning, especially in Hokkaido area. Approaching to notonly theories of city planning but proposing desirable cities and regionsand having some projects of urban planning and design is our importantpolicy. Making project partnership with citizens and public sectors iseffective approach for solving to urban problems. Otherwise, we haveresearch projects with U.S. and Russian Universities.

 Urban Disaster Protection Planning

Professor KAGAMI Hiroshi,  Instructor TAKAI Nobuo

Our research laboratory has conducted a variety of advanced research studies related to disasters, involving undergraduateand graduate students. The center has maintained a particular focus on earthquake disasters, since its establishment in 1973. Ourinterdisciplinary research includes a wide range of sciences including seismology, earthquakeĦĦengineering, urban protectionplanning, and administrative response management, social disaster science and medical disaster science. As to seismology, we havebeen improving the methodology of seismic monitoring. We also have greatly improved seismic disaster assessment techniques inconnection with earthquake mechanism theory, ground amplification theory and various kinds of vulnerability functions both from theseismological point of view and earthquake point of view. By applying medical science in addition to engineering perspectives, wehave increased the sophisticated of the mitigation plans inclusive of work on human behavior and casualty occurrence underearthquake conditions.

 Environmental City Planning

Professor KOSHIZAWA Akira , Associate Professor HASEBE Masaki , Instructor NAKAMURA Akira

We engage in the study of policies in the fields of city planning and social infrastructure improvement from the viewpoint of environment. We deal with policies and practices in city planning and social infrastructure improvement that are high-quality, beautiful and environment-oriented in the age of inter-city competition of the 21 century. Our research fields are wide and they include the following topics; urban regeneration and private urban developments, the improvement of densely-inhabited old wooden residential areas, land use control, preservation of green open space and formation of green-rich towns, preservation and regeneration of historically-formulated areas, planning for excellent housing development in rural areas, green space functions of rivers and roads and nature regeneration. The professor is advising the Japanese Government (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) as well as the cities of Sapporo, Kamakura, Otsu and others on their policy making and planning. His researches reflect these experiences of involvement with the actual problems.

Transportation and Traffic Systems Engineering

The purposes of our laboratory include systematic research and education on the planning, construction, operation and management of transportation infrastructures. Concretely, our research and education target the construction and improvement of transportation systems, or fields to establish transport planning harmonizing with the nature. To realize the aim, materials used to construct, maintain and manage transportation facilities and efficient operation and safety action for transportation systems including roadway, railway, airline, waterway and so on are being studied.

 Transportation and Traffic Systems Planning

Professor KAGAYA Seiichi , Associate Professor HAGIWARA Toru , Instructor UCHIDA Ken-etsu

Transportation means movements of people. From this point, "transportation" and "sensitivity of human being" are keywords of studies carried out in our laboratory. For example, our studies contain the user attitude surveys on traffic measures or traffic maintenance plans, and the traffic assignment based on objective data to predict traffic demand in road network. Furthermore, paying attention to automobile traffic, the evaluations of drivers\' visibility and road conditions aiming at improvements in road cursoriality are also carried out.
Keyword Transportation planning, Traffic demand prediction, evaluation of drivers' visibility

 Traffic Facility Engineering

Professor MORIYOSHI Akihiro , Associate Professor TAKANO Shin-ei , Instructor KAMIJIMA Tsuyoshi

Our laboratory has been conducted on research in bituminous material for long years.Main subjects are evaluation of asphalt pavement, characteristics of materials, durability for long life, contribution of organic matters in air, damage of civil structures due to air pollution and wheel load, construction management, especially on movement of aggregate in mixture under moving wheel at high temperature. Rutting in asphalt pavement occurred by movement of aggregate in mixture due to wheel load at high temperature.

 Traffic Control and Safety Engineering

Professor SATOH Keiichi , Associate Professor NAKATSUJI Takashi , Instructor KISHI Kunihiro

Our research areas target not only road relevant issues but also efficient operation of railway, air, sea, and other transportations including measures for their safety. With the aim of developing theories for the most optimal transport control, we are progressing modeling of traffic behavior. Toward realization of safe and reliable transportation, we also are studying ergonomics particularly focusing on relations between transportation systems and the users.
