Japanese government MEXT: Top Global University Scholarship

In September 2014 Hokkaido University has been selected for the Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Top Global University Project, as one of the 13 Type A: Top Type universities. This higher education reform initiative aims to support internationalization and reform in Japanese universities and help to improve their world ranking in the next 10 years. Few additional scholarships have been provided under this project.

Conditions of the scholarship (as of April 2017)

Amount: 144,000yen (regular students in Master’s course), or 145,000 yen (regular students in doctoral course). Additional 3000 yen are paid during the winter semester. Arrival ticket is provided (return travel expenses are not provided).

Tuition fees: exempted for the period of the scholarship

Period of the scholarship: 24 month (extension of the period of the scholarship is not possible*);
*The scholarship will cover only first two years of doctoral program;
*The extension of scholarhsip from Master's course to Phd is not possible.

Number of scholarships: few

Admission

Admission with this scholarship is possible only in October.

Application deadline and procedure

If you are interested in this scholarship, please proceed following the admission schedule for e3 Special Selection, October 2018 intake[link: Apply for admission] and submit your application documents before May 14, 2018.

Appicants will be notified on the availability of potential research supervisor and scholarship eligibility by May 25th. Scholarship nomination results will be announced in mIddle June.
Successfull candidates are excempt from the payment of the examination fee (JPY30'000). Application fee payment for the eligible scholarship applicants can be deferred untill the scholarship selection results announcement.

Eligibility

Scholarship has age restrictions. Applicants for October 2018 intake must have been born on or after April 2,1983.
Applicants must have nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Applicants who reside in Japan are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants shall fulfill e3 program admission requirnements (e3 Special Selection)
Applicant should have excellent academic performance, fulfill program's and MEXT minimum requirenments and be ranked high in his class/grade.

 

Japanese government (MEXT) scholarships, embassy selection –

Conditions of this scholarship are similar to MEXT scholarship e3 selection.
Apply through the Japanese Embassy in your home country using the application form provided by the Japanese Embassy.  If you pass the preliminary screening, you will be asked to submit an acceptance letter from a Japanese university of your choice.  To obtain a letter of acceptance from e3, you should send/email us a set of the same documents as those submitted to the Japanese Embassy, with a confirmation seal of the Japanese Embassy affixed, and a certificate of the primary selection issued by the Japanese Embassy.  You should select two professors or laboratories in your message so that we can forward your application to them for consideration. Japanese government MEXT scholarship, nomination through e3 program (no call for applications for October 2018 Intake)

Important: This scholarship was offered in the past, but there will be no call for the applications for October 2018 intake.

Conditions of the scholarship (as of April 2016)

Each grantee will be provided monthly with 144,000 yen (regular students in Master’s courses), or 145,000 yen (regular students in doctoral courses). Additional 3000 yen are paid during the winter semester. However the amount of allowance is subject to change depending upon the annual budget of the Japanese government for each fiscal year. Grantee will be provided arrival ticket from the nearest to his home address international airport to the designated international airport in Japan and return ticket upon completion of the program.
Grantee is exempted from admission and tuition fees.

Admission:

Admission with this scholarship is possible only in October.

Period of the scholarship (in case of October 2017 intake)

Master’s: October 2017 – September 2019
Doctoral: October 2017- September 2020

Master's course grantees can apply for scholarship extension for Doctoral program. Extension is granted on competitive basis.
