Graduation
requirements

1. |
Master's degree
(normally 2 years)
To qualify
for the degree of master, you must satisfactorily earn a
minimum of 30 credits from coursework and pass a thesis
defense. |

1.1 |
A minimum of 16 credits must come from
courses offered by your Division/Subject Group. However, if
deemed necessary by your supervisor, 2 credits may come from
a new course (introduced after your
enrollment) or courses offered by other Divisions or other
graduate schools within or outside Hokkaido University
including those overseas. |

A
minimum of 4 credits
come from courses offered by another Division/Subject Group.

1.3 |
The remaining 10 credits come from
laboratory seminar. |

2. |
Doctoral degree
(normally 3 years)

To qualify for the degree of doctor, you
must have

2.1 |
satisfactorily earned a minimum of 10
credits of coursework and passed the dissertation defense.

2.2 |
(students enrolled before October 2008)
at least one paper published or accepted with confirmed
publishing schedule and one paper submitted.
At least one of the papers must be in an international
refereed journal*.
(students enrolled in October 2008 and later) at least one
paper published or accepted with confirmed publishing
schedule and one paper submitted.
If the published or accepted paper is
not in an international journal*, his/her dissertation must
be reviewed by an external examiner.
*In principle, a journal contained in
ISI journal list or
equivalent, is considered international. |

Important note
-
All
publications and courses that can be counted toward
graduation requirement must be in English.

When e3 practices are more stringent,
some Divisions simply follow e3 practices. However
some Divisions want their students to also follow their
practice. In such cases, please follow both
practices.

also have their own graduation requirements.
Please make sure that you meet the
graduation requirement
set by your Division as well.

All e3 doctoral students are
subject to a progress evaluation by the program committee
at the end of the 1st and 2nd year.
